about

My good friend Stan once said to me "Jimmy, we have all done evil". I've been writing a song about Billy the Kid for ages. I now had my opening line.

This song is about the infamous slaying of Billy by Pat Garrett. It imagines Billy singing to his friends. It also hints that Billy actually didn't die July 14, 1881, living to a ripe old age where he can close his eyes and dream of space travel as a form of escape from his violent past.

The wider theme is of redemption and forgiveness.

lyrics

$500

We’ve all done evil
Under the sun
craving danger
he cleans his gun

fame at 21
500 on his head
Shout “Who is it”?
Bang, a legend’s dead

I’m never scared
when Billy sings
tears freeze
when Billy sings

The town seems calm
high on our hill
Angels fear to tread here
and ghosts don’t forgive

Close my eyes
I’m in a rocket to the moon
Oh tomorrow!
I’m leaving with you
